What gets you off your couch and to the gym? And what makes you take it to the next level?
For me, like a lot of people, music is a huge part of working out. I love music and dancing and having the right tunes can always make me go that extra kilometer on my run or push it that little bit harder in a spin or HIIT class. Moving my body and keeping fit feels good, but moving my body to a beat feels even better.
Pure Gym got in touch with me recently to tell me about a competition they're running--What's Your Dream Playlist?--and it got me thinking about what my top tunes are for a hardcore sweaty session.
A lot of my current playlist is just that... current. I'm a sucker for anything that's in the charts and I like to try to keep up to date. The key is something I can sing along to (between gasping for air ;) ).
But when I think about the tunes that will always make me want to kick some serious butt in the gym or on the bike, I have to say my taste is... eclectic leaning to the side of classic cheese!
So, here are ten tracks that I love with some recent hits and some of what my iTunes tells me are my most-listened. High cheese factor towards the end, but you can't beat classic tunes.
Chandelier - Sia
I like this as a warm-up tune or for a really focussed ride track during spin class.
212 - Azealia Banks
Not safe for kids ears! But this is a seriously awesome track.
Happy - Pharrell
I think this one requires no explanation. So happy-fying.
Titanium - David Guetta ft Sia
This one speaks to my love of things like Glee and Pitch Perfect. And the lyrics are about being invincible (ish). Great workout tune.
Starships - Nicki Minaj
The sing-along-ability of this one, with the bounciness of the tune and the enviable (although probably totally unrealistic) bod of Nicki herself inspire me to crank out another few reps just to hear the end of the song.
Call me Maybe - Carly Rae Jepsen
I secretly (okay, not so secretly since I'm putting this on the internet) love that Carly Rae is Canadian. Super pop cheese!
Wake me up before you go - Wham!
When this comes on it makes me laugh and forget whatever pain I might be in. Less pain = more progress. So this is a workout playlist staple.
What's Up - DJ Miko
This cover of the slower song by Four Non Blondes. Just. Yes.
Take On Me - A-ha
The video is basically a chase scene/dramatic escape (from a comic book) so the 80's beat is great. See also 'Holding Out for a Hero' by Bonnie Tyler and 'Maniac' from Flashdance (which always makes me laugh because it reminds me of this).
Don't Stop Me Now - Queen
Ultimate closer! I defy anyone to hear this song and not want to get up and run around the block. Channel that and it always makes me pick up my pace and push for the finish.
There are so, so many more that didn't make this list (Beastie Boys, Hole, Journey, Fatboy Slim, Missy Elliot, Run DMC... the list goes on. And on.) but these are a few I love. Hope you enjoy them and maybe a few make it to your playlist too.
