Human + fuel = Huel

Today I'm starting an experiment. It involves something called Huel.

Huel is, according to the company that makes, 'the future of food'. I'm not so sure. It's a bold claim.

I've never been one for fad diets. As you probably know already if you've read my blog before, I'm all about balance. Everything in moderation. I like cocktails as much as I love kale. I also love baking and the process of making meals, so I've never gone in for protein shakes or SlimFast-style diets.

But Huel got me curious because they don't sell themselves as a workout shake or a diet, per se. Apparently they are a 'nutritionally complete' meal option. In powdered form. It's vegan friendly and, they believe, a solution to the food and obesity crisis we're facing (more on that in a later blog post). When they got in touch with me, I knew I wanted to give it a try.

So how does it all work?

I was sent a pack that included a week's worth of Huel--enough for all my caloric needs for seven days--a shaker, a water bottle, and a t-shirt.

They have a very helpful page on their web site that explains step-by-step how to use it, including figuring out your daily caloric needs and alternatives for making things other than a drink version (I feel like this could come in handy in a few days when the thought of a liquid meal makes me want to cry). And it's actually pretty flexible.

While you can use it for every meal, they also explain how to mix it into pancakes or muffins, or suggest balancing it with a regular meal once a day.

This is how my experiment is going to work:

- Seven days using Huel as my main source of nutrition for as many meals as possible. I know I have a BBQ on Saturday and I'll probably be out for lunch on Sunday, so I'm giving myself a pass for those, and it all ends when I go to a celebration next Wednesday.

- Liquid form only. Part of what I like about the Huel solution is that you don't have to do prep, clean up or think about it.

- Keep up my normal life. Other than not eating meals out, I want to be able to work, workout and carry on life as normal.

- Try not to get grumpy. I've already warned Mr F and all my colleagues about what I'm doing. I think they're scared! (I'm not normally a grumpy person but they know I like my food!!)

- Maybe slim down a bit. I'm not a calorie counter so I've gone with the amount of Huel they recommend for maintaining weight but as I don't know how much I normally eat in calories, I'm interested to see if I lose weight using it. I've put on a couple of pounds since starting my current job so while this isn't my main goal, I'd be happy if this was part of the result.

I'm excited to see what this Huel food-alternative thing is all about -- I've never done anything like it so I'm curious as to whether I'll feel full enough and also have enough energy to live my normal day-to-day. Stay tuned!
